More than 20 years ago, ROSA’s founder Suzanne Mitchell was directing a television segment for a People Magazine special spotlighting fascinating people when she met conservationist cowboy Dayton O. Hyde. She knew immediately that she had met an incredible man whose story deserved more than the small segment she was producing. Suzanne, an award winning film maker, planned and saved to make her own feature length documentary for over a decade to share his inspirational story of protecting animals and the environment with the world.
The truth that guides Dayton – that everyone can make a difference if they fight for what they believe in – is the guiding principle behind ROSA’s formation and continues to inspire Suzanne and all of ROSA’s volunteers and supporters. We will be successful in protecting the Patrick Farm from inappropriate development if we work together, for the right reasons, with a long term perspective.
Suzanne’s feature film directorial debut Running Wild: The Life of Dayton O. Hyde is premiering in theaters across the country on October 4. The film tells Dayton’s story, from his challenges to his successes, and features breathtaking scenery shot in spectacular locations, central to Dayton’s life.
Please join us at 6pm Saturday, October 5 for a fundraiser screening of this incredible documentary at the Lafayette Theatre in Suffern. Tickets are only $10 when purchased in advance online. Purchase in advance is recommended as tickets will be sold at a higher $15 price at the door price until sold out.
To further support ROSA and for a really special evening please make a larger tax-deductible donation for a Screening/Fundraiser combo; after the screening, join the ROSA team for a cocktail party event* where you will get to meet ROSA director/founder and the film’s director, Suzanne Mitchell with special guest, Dayton O. Hyde. The after party will also feature a live performance by the film’s soundtrack composer and award winning singer-songwriter Steve Poltz. Suzanne remains dedicated to ROSA and is excited to share a film that not only inspired her but will inspire countless others to make an effort to save our natural environment. Tickets for both the film and this event are available online in advance for a $95 donation and tickets for only this event only are $85 if purchase online in advance. At the door pricing will be $10 extra.
Thanks to the generous donation of Gary Goldberg, the after film event and concert will be held at the Gary Goldberg Financial Services Montebello Mansion – an 1860′s country estate located across from the Suffern Middle School.
This special after party for ROSA supporters is scheduled from 8-10pm.
*Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served.
Running Wild: The Life of Dayton O. Hyde
Dayton’s interest in wildlife and nature began in his youth, and his passion for conservation grew into efforts to protect the environment — his 12,000-acre Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in South Dakota is home to almost 600 horses that run free, most rescued from the controversial wild mustang roundups that have been featured prominently in the news. Dayton saved the Sanctuary land itself — had he not bought the property (with maxed out credit cards and government loans), the beautiful and environmentally sensitive land would’ve been developed and forever lost! Instead, it is a sanctuary to wildlife where golden eagles fly above. From his conservation efforts with the sandhill crane, to his work with coyote, to his current fight to protect the aquifer and water supply in South Dakota’s Black Hills from a proposed uranium mining project, at 88 years old, Dayton is going strong.
